SixShot.com: What were your biggest musical influences?
Slim Thug: My biggest musical influences had to be Scarface, UGK, Jay-Z you know and Tupac.
SixShot.com: How did you get your name “Slim Thug”?
Slim Thug: Slim Thug, it came about when I was about 15 years old but ya know what I’m saying, I used to carry myself slim but there were a lot of slims going on. People used to say I looked like a thug so I kinda just put that at the end made it full.
SixShot.com: When is your album dropping?
Slim Thug: Its dropping December 7th its called Slim Thug “Already Platinum” my first solo first debut ever. It’s on Interscope.
SixShot.com: If you could choose anyone in the game who would you choose to do a track with?
Slim Thug: Anybody, shit, like a Tupac or Biggie, shit, I would definitely work with one of them.
SixShot.com: So what song has the most lyrical meaning to you on your upcoming album?
Slim Thug: On my album, umm I don’t know I got a lot of favorites, I think my favorite one is called “Dedicate” it’s about one of my partners I lost a couple years back, it just everybody around me, it’s a touching song and it’s the truth. It tells about what happened. “Dedicate” is the one that means the most to me.
SixShot.com: So how was it working with the Neptunes?
Slim Thug: It’s a beautiful experience, you know being a new artist coming out with somebody like them, they geniuses at what they doing. It makes it real comfortable over there. It’s kind of hard to lose when you got people like that backing you. I love it. Pharrell and Chad are real cool real easy to work with. Easy to get along with…
SixShot.com: I also heard you got a bunch of business’s running. You got a Car Dealership, a Stip Club, a Record Shop. How are they going?
Slim Thug: I do a lot of stuff out here. Its going good, I’ve had the record store for a couple of years the car lot is still in the making, working on getting some permits from the city and stuff. I do a lot of real estate too. You know fixing them up and selling them or renting them out. You can’t be one sided. You gotta have more than one. The average guy can’t rap forever. I gotta try to get something together for my son.
SixShot.com: Since you have all this going on, it seems your kind of a business man, how did you get in the rap game. What where you first, a business man or an MC?
Slim Thug: I describe myself as a hustler ya know. Being a hustler, you just don’t do one thing, when you see your opportunity to make money you take’em. I was only 17 when I started rapping, you know I did lil’ stuff, now seeing that I can make money off rapping I went full force with it instead of just playing with it. I love music, I wasn’t really thinking of being a rapper and I was kind of doing it for the fun of it until I saw the money then I saw other opportunity’s to make more money. I was selling CD’s to this store this dude was like, we are going under, they weren’t able to handle it so I put my money up and bought the shop from him. You know… I saw money right there. You know you gotta get money as many ways as you can, thats what I think.
SixShot.com: How long has it been since you’ve been discovered as a Music Artist? What did you do to get recognized?
Slim Thug: It was mix tapes, that’s my story, I did a lot of mix tapes, that’s what I started doing when I was 17. I got with a hot DJ out here and you know Texas, the rap scene is different, everyone out here is on the Screw music. I know a lot of people around the world aren’t on it yet but there are a lot of people who are on it. It’s not just Texas no more. It got real big doing those mix tapes. It’s kind of a gift and a curse. Not everyone likes it but the people who like it love it. I ain’t really done regular albums without being slowed down. Since I haven’t done regular songs it stopped a lot of people from hearing me out of my city.
SixShot.com: Have you talked with any other record labels, now you’re with Interscope?
Slim Thug: I talked to a lot of other record labels; record labels have been trying to get at me for a couple years now since like 2000. I never really took it serious because down in Texas I don’t know if you know this but you this the independent market is real good out here. You could make a lot of money out hear being independent. You could sell up to 150 200,000 records independent at 8 dollars or 7 dollars. That’s good money. I was selling a lot of records independent. I didn’t want to sign to a record label, Like I said I’m a Hustler Im more of a business person than trying to be famous you know what I’m saying it wasn’t my dream to be famous It was getting this money. So when they were offering me deals they weren’t realizing how much I was making. They would offer little deals and I was like nah I ain’t going to take it. I was like I’m going to stay doing it how I was doing it and make this money independent. I did everything I could, I did shows all around all these cities and towns around Texas and Louisiana. I want to see my career go farther than that. So that what lead me to sign. Interscope came through with the right check, still let me do a lot of independent work so that’s what I ran with. They got a hell of a system.
Sixshot.com: Explain “Incredible Feeling”. What feeling were you talking about?
Slim Thug: It’s the incredible feeling, you know coming from nothing not having a lot to doing what you love to get lot’s of money for it. It’s the incredible feeling of making good money.
Sixshot.com: What do you think of the state of hip-hop right now?
Slim Thug: The state of hip-hop right now, I like it they got a lot of good people out there you know what I’m saying. It’s time for a change or whatever. Its time its time. I think everyone is doing a lil’ too much killing right now, I don’t believe it. I think hip-hop needs to change. I rap and I’m more of a realist you know if I did it I ain’t gonna say, that how I put myself out there that’s how people know me independent. If I say I GOT THIS BENTLEY THEN I’m riding in it. I think that’s a part of my longevity I think that’s why a lot of people are still down with me still got a lot of love for me because they know me as a real dude not somebody just put words together. I think that plays a big part in me making history.
Sixshot.com: Southern rap is booming right now, do you think too many that too many southern rappers are appearing and are kind of saturating the market. Rappers that are not southern are even making southern beats. Being southern is huge.
Slim Thug: I see what you’re saying, there is a lot of that going on it’s like we the new coach. People around the world are finally opening there eyes and listening to us. I think eventually its going to be a change. There are too many people that are getting across. That’s out of the South though. You hear a lot of Atlanta. That ain’t really what we about, we slow it down real mellow out here. I’m going to let Atlanta represent how they represent and I’m show you how Houston due.
Sixshot.com: What do you think of the upcoming election?
Slim Thug: The upcoming election, I’m really up and down with it. I ain’t gonna lie I ain’t to happy with what Bush is doing but I also don’t think Kerry is the answer out. I think Bush got us in a whole right now as far as what he did with the economy. I don’t know if Kerry is going to help shit out. I don’t know, I just don’t know what we got in store for this nation. I don’t know who to vote for. I ain’t trying to vote for Bush at all. I don’t even if I want to even vote for Kerry. I need to vote so most likely its going to be Kerry.
Sixshot.com: Do you use the Internet personally?
Slim Thug: I’m not really an internet head, I ain’t gonna lie. I never really was the type of person to sit at home and get on the internet a lot. I get on it about once every two weeks for about an hour.
Sixshot.com: What are your plans for the future?
Slim Thug: To get money and be set for life have my lil’ boy set for life and my family set for life. However it come, if it’s with rappin’, if it’s with real estate if it’s with doing clothes whatever man. Whatever it is I’m on it. Gotta get it!
